New York Knicks free agents: Bobby Portis

2019-20 Stats: 10.1 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 1.5 APG, 21.1 MPG, 45 FG%, 35.8% 3P%

Prediction: Signs Elsewhere

Bobby Portis has a unique blend of shooting and ball-handling for a near 7-footer, and when he is on, he is hard to contain. However, his streakiness and inconsistency on offense is something that is worrying for a player who is not a good defender.

Portis’ shot selection is questionable, and he tries too often to play hero ball rather than move within the offense. He camps out on the perimeter when he should be playing down low and using his speed to get past slower big men.

He has not been horrible this season, but he has not given the Knicks management any reason for them to want him back, especially given his $15.75 million team option.

Part of Portis’ underwhelming season with the Knicks came from being stuck in a crowded frontcourt. Julius Randle, who has similar limitations to Portis, is simply more consistent on offense and is a better player. Mitchell Robinson is a much better defender and is part of the Knicks’ future while Portis was unable to prove he could stick with the team. Taj Gibson also started 56 games to Portis’ 5 games, showing that the staff preferred having Gibson on the court.

Portis is not a bad player and could certainly find success in the right role and situation. However, the Knicks are not the ideal situation and will likely not bring back Portis because of his hefty team option, an overpay given his production this season.
