New York Knicks: Five options at center in 2020 NBA Draft
James Wiseman, Memphis Tigers
The No. 1 center in the 2020 NBA Draft may also end up being the No. 1 overall selection. James Wiseman has a limited sample size of college-level film, but most agree that he has the tools to become a perennial All-Star at the next level.
If the New York Knicks believe that Wiseman gives the team a better opportunity to win than Mitchell Robinson, or that they can play together, it may be worth the risk.
Wiseman stands at 7’1″ with a 7’5″ wingspan, which creates the foundation for his potential success. He’s a fluid athlete who runs the floor well, can play above the rim, and moves with agility off of high screens into dives towards the basket.
That also enables Wiseman to switch against the pick and roll, thus allowing him to pick up perimeter players and disrupt the passing lanes.
Offensively, Wiseman is an impressive finisher around the rim who has shown the ability to play with his back to the basket. He’s also flashed range on his shot, including a midrange game that has the potential to blossom in the right NBA system.
The Knicks need to do serious homework before even considering this pick, but it would be wise to at least evaluate Wiseman as a prospect instead of entirely writing him off.
Mitchell Robinson has the keys to the future at the center position, but the New York Knicks can find depth and further talent at the 2020 NBA Draft.
