Taj Gibson

It’s entirely possible that the Knicks could waive Taj Gibson, taking them off the hook for the $9.45 million he is owed next season, and then sign him back to a team-friendly deal. The veteran big man might decide he rather stay in one place than make another jump at this point in his career, and it’s hard to believe the market for him would be very lucrative.

If Tom Thibodeau ends up coaching the Knicks, then you can definitely expect Gibson to find a way back onto the roster, as he has been one of Thibs biggest supporters after playing for him in Chicago and Minnesota. Gibson says the former Knick assistant has been “misunderstood.”

If Thibs doesn’t end up back in New York, or Gibson is able to find a decent contract offer on the open market, I wouldn’t expect the Knicks to go out of their way to keep him. While continuity is important, he has only been with the team for one season, and there are other veteran voices they can find on minimum deals to help their locker room.

Gibson has played in 62 games so far this season, seeing his points per game average drop below ten points for the first time in four seasons. However, he wasn’t brought to New York to score, as much as guide the young players. He has been a good foot solider for the team.
