Scott Perry isn’t guaranteed to be the general manager of the New York Knicks in 2020-21, but a recent report indicates he’ll still lead the team at the 2020 NBA Draft.
The New York Knicks made the rare decision to replace the acting team president in the midst of the regular season. Longtime Knicks executive Steve Mills was relieved of his duties and replaced with well-known agent Leon Rose.
Rose has been patient with his evaluations of the current Knicks personnel, but a recent report indicates that he’s in favor of keeping Scott Perry on as general manager.
For now.
Perry has been the general manager of the Knicks since July of 2017. During that time, the Knicks have drafted promising young prospects, accumulated assets in the form of future NBA Draft picks, and traded former franchise player Kristaps Porzingis.
According to Marc Berman of The New York Post, Perry’s future with the Knicks is still being evaluated, but he will remain general manager through the 2020 NBA Draft.
"With Brock Aller soon to jump from the Cavaliers to become the Knicks’ vice president of strategy, general manager Scott Perry still will plow on in preparing for the NBA draft and is expected to run it — whenever the event takes place."
Once the NBA Draft has concluded, however, Berman reports that Perry’s role as general manager will be reevaluated.
"Though Rose is considering keeping Perry, one NBA source told The Post, “The impression is Leon will do his due diligence.’’"
There’s a lot to unpack.
Perry remaining general manager through the NBA Draft is an understandable approach. During his brief tenure, he’s drafted RJ Barrett in the first round, selected Mitchell Robinson in the second, and signed Allonzo Trier as an undrafted free agent.
The jury is still out on Kevin Knox, but most would agree that the Knicks have drafted relatively well during Perry’s stint as general manager.
What’s somewhat puzzling, however, is the sourced report that indicates Perry could be relieved of his duties once the NBA Draft has concluded.
The Knicks could potentially allow Perry to run the NBA Draft process, only to replace him with a new general manager who will use the roster that he compiled. This would seemingly transpire before the return on Perry’s draft-night decisions could be seen.
It must be stated that this is a sourced report, and not a stated fact, but the Knicks certainly know how to keep us on our toes.
Only time will tell what transpires with Scott Perry, but it seems as though the New York Knicks will utilize his NBA Draft knowledge to their advantage in 2020.
