Pro: He Fits Well With The Younger Players

If RJ Barrett is the future at shooting guard, and Kevin Knox and Mitchell Robinson fit that same bill at their respective positions, then the New York Knicks will need shooters. Said players could be found in the NBA Draft, or even on the present-day roster if Reggie Bullock rediscovers his form.

Wayne Ellington is one of the better three-point shooters in the NBA, however, and that makes him an ideal fit with the youth movement—despite his age.

Every team needs veterans in the locker room, which is a point that needs to be made up front. Leadership is as important as talent when developing a young team, and Ellington has 11 seasons of NBA experience that suggest he has wisdom to impart.

That could be as valuable as what he brings to the court, if not more so, and it should be seriously considered before the Knicks move on to other options.

On the court, having a player who can simply spot up and shoot would make life easier for the younger players. It would mean less isolation plays for veterans, and more prove-it moments for the generation that could anchor the return to prominence.

Throw in Ellington’s defensive prowess and he’s the perfect complement to New York’s younger players, who are still figuring their game out.

Wayne Ellington may not have played consistent minutes in 2019-20, but the New York Knicks should give serious thought to his role in 2020-21.
