The New York Knicks are reportedly interested in Detroit Pistons big man Christian Wood. What would the pros and cons be of signing Wood in free agency?

The New York Knicks are preparing for a 2020 period of free agency unlike any other in NBA history. The effect of COVID-19 is still unknown, as the approach of free agents could be anywhere between refusing anything other than a long-term deal and looking for a short-term cash grab.

Compounded by the absence of All-Star free agents, this coming summer could see teams either overpay role players or secure unprecedented bargain deals.

One of the players whom the Knicks believe will stand out from the pack is current Detroit Pistons power forward Christian Wood. Wood is a quiet candidate for Most Improved Player, as he’s capitalized on Blake Griffin’s injury absence by piecing together his best NBA season to date.

According to Ian Begley of SNY, some members of the Knicks’ front office are enamored with Wood’s capabilities and potential.

"While it’s way too early to know who they’ll target, it’s worth noting that some in the Knicks’ front office are enamored with Detroit’s Christian Wood."

Begley added:

"Per a source, New York had been monitoring Wood for much of the season prior to the coronavirus outbreak. That tells you that Wood is on the Knicks’ radar."

Considering the Knicks also looked into trading Julius Randle at the trade deadline, there could be fire causing this type of smoke.

Wood, 24, has been one of the internet’s favorite project players for quite some time now. His combination of size, length, and athleticism jumped off the screen in college, as did his ability to knock down three-point shots.

The question is: Should the New York Knicks actually sign the former UNLV star this coming offseason?
