Pro: Multifaceted Value

Despite the reputation that he’s been given, Charlotte Hornets guard Terry Rozier is actually a rather versatile player. Yes, his primary value to whichever team he plays for will be found in his ability to convert from beyond the three-point line.

Rozier isn’t as much a player with weaknesses as he is a player without defined strengths beyond shooting, however, and that isn’t the worst thing a player can be.

Rozier isn’t the best defender in the NBA, but he’s far from a liability on that end of the floor. He ranked 24th at the point guard position in Defensive Real Plus-Minus in 2017-18, and checked in at 25th during the 2018-19 campaign.

Rozier’s defensive play has dipped in 2019-20, but he’s also been asked to take on a bigger offensive role than he would have in New York—and even still, he hasn’t been outright bad defensively.

He just hasn’t played quite as well as he did when his offensive role was more limited—an inevitability in this NBA.

Furthermore, Rozier is a competent playmaker. An average of 4.1 assists per game may not blow you away, but he’s playing alongside point guard Devonte’ Graham, who ranks eighth in the NBA in assists per game.

As such, those 4.1 assists are of heightened value—especially when one considers that he’s maintained a career turnover average of just 1.7 per 36 minutes.

Rozier is certainly a score-first type of player, but he’s proven in both Boston and Charlotte that he can contribute quality minutes across the board.
