Becky Hammon

Could Leon Rose hire the first ever female head coach in NBA history? If so, is Becky Hammon a good fit for the New York Knicks? The answer is yes.

Hammon is in the midst of her sixth season under Popovich and has been serving as his top assistant since 2018. Hammon served as the summer league head coach in 2015, 2016 and 2019, winning the summer league title in 2015.

Greg Popovich’s coaching tree is felt in the roots of the NBA. There are 5 current head coaches who served as assistants under Popovich and 2 head coaches who served as the team’s G-League head coach. Becky Hammon will be the next Spur’s assistant to get a head coaching gig.

Like Jackson, Hammon has her own player ties to New York. Hammon spent the first 8 seasons in the WNBA suiting up for the New York Liberty. Hammon is regarded among the best players to ever play for the Liberty. She would play 8 more seasons with the San Antonio Stars before retiring in 2014.

Back in 2018, Hammon even interviewed with the Milwaukee Bucks for their vacant head coaching position, before it was filled by another former Spur’s assistant in Mike Budenholzer

She’s been defying the odds her entire career, and becoming the first ever female head coach in the NBA for the New York Knicks would just be her next feat.
