Steve Mills was relieved of his position as the President of the New York Knicks on February 2nd of 2020.

While this wasn’t a complete surprise to most NBA fans, the timing of it was quite unexpected.

With the trade deadline inches away and the probable involvement of Steve Mills with current trade talks, something must have went south for the long-tenured executive to be relieved of his position at this time.

From the looks of it, it seems like he will still be around as a part of the organization but he won’t carry any power in regards to the New York Knicks operation.

With Steve Mills in charge, the New York Knicks have not had a single winning season. The most games he won from 2004-2009 was 33 games. The most amount of games he won from 2013-2020 was 37. His winning percentage for his entire tenure as a Knicks executive is at 33.8%. Even Ernie Grunfeld had more success with the Wizards in the same time frame.

His time with the Knicks will be remembered as very underwhelming and full of questionable executive decisions. That being said, I won’t be surprised if James Dolan puts Steve Mills back into the Knicks in the future.

The Knicks currently sit at 15-36 as the 13th in the Eastern Conference and went through a coaching change in the middle of the season. With the signing of multiple 2 year deals with NBA veterans, the trade market can really make or break the plan of the front office from last summer.

Negativity aside, relieving Steve Mills allows the Knicks to really assess the skills of Scott Perry. I believe the Knicks are headed to a much better position with Scott Perry making the calls. In the next couple of days, we will be able to see whether Scott Perry is an improvement from Mills or not.
