Best ‘Revenge’ Game: Bobby Portis vs Chicago

Why not the obvious? When the season was younger and the New York Knicks’ blemishes were less apparent, Bobby Portis‘ 28 points and 11 rebounds against his old team, the Chicago Bulls, erupted Madison Square Garden. The “Bobb-y Port-is” chants were in full effect, and it seemed that all was well for one night when the Knicks won their first game. Plus, overcoming a deficit made the win even sweeter for them.

Portis was perfect from behind the arc, at 4-for-4, and he missed just four shots overall from the field. It was, by far, his best game as a Knick so far, since the others have been forgettable, and this outing remains the only time he has topped 20 points this season.

The Knicks need more special performances like that.

Honorary Mention: Defeating Kristaps Porzingis’ Mavericks twice

Defeating Kristaps Porzingis‘ Dallas Mavericks twice was sweet for the Knicks, but these account for half of their win total. It’s impressive, but not that impressive. Defeat someone else.

Worst Game: Dec. 2 at Milwaukee

Monday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks was a partial inspiration for the Quarter-Year Awards, as it brought the New York Knicks to their lowest point of the season.

Granted, the other team had Giannis Antetokounmpo, but the Knicks played like there were five of him. Effort lacked from the start at both ends and the team shot an abysmal 30.8 percent, which was 28-for-91 from the field. It was that horrifying.

How the Knicks recover from this, if at all, will be fascinating. From the Nuggets and Pacers at home to a four-game road trip out west, there are no signs of anything being easier. The Bucks also come to the Garden on Dec. 21, so that should be fun, too.

Honorary Mention: Nov. 10 vs. Cleveland

If not for Milwaukee’s annihilation, what the 5-14 Cleveland Cavaliers did to the Knicks on Nov. 10 would have won out. The final score was 108-87, but it probably deserved to be worse, as New York had no answer for Collin Sexton or Jordan Clarkson‘s work off the bench.
