The New York Knicks will open the 2019-20 NBA season against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday, Oct. 23. A look at the game information for the first matchup of the year.

Basketball season officially returns for the New York Knicks on Wednesday, Oct. 23. It welcomes back a team who underwent a difficult, disparaging year in 2018-19, from the 17-65 record to the breakdown with the should-have-been face of the franchise, Kristaps Porzingis.

The Knicks have the chance to shed that that disappointment quickly, after revamping their roster with young players and veteran free agents. However, it starts against the San Antonio Spurs, perhaps the NBA’s most consistent franchise of the past 20 years.

There could be some bad blood between these teams. Marcus Morris, who signed a one-year, $15 million contract with New York, had reached a verbal agreement with the Spurs in free agency. He reneged San Antonio’s offer, though, and Davis Bergman’s had already been traded to Washington to make this transaction happen.

As a result, look for the jeers from the AT&T Center crowd to break out. They last did this in full force for Kawhi Leonard’s return earlier this year.

For the basketball side, for now, David Fizdale’s starting lineup remains in question. He has yet to officially announce it, but whatever plans are in place may be impacted by injury, as Mitchell Robinson suffered a sprained right ankle earlier this week and is questionable to play. Without him, the Knicks could turn to Bobby Portis at center or Taj Gibson, who is also hurt.

Playing short-handed may mask New York’s rotation crunch, as Fizdale tinkered with different looks in the preseason, which resulted in some players sitting on the bench.
