New York Knicks: Five players with the most to prove in training camp
2. Kevin Knox
Someone who took as significant of a role as Kevin Knox in Year One usually does not fall in the “prove-it” category, but he struggled at both ends of the floor as a rookie, including shooting below 40 percent from the field and complications keeping opponents in front of him.
The roster was clear for Knox to take a main spot, especially in the “developmental” season. However, roster additions do not guarantee what type of role he will take as a sophomore, making training camp a proving ground against some of the new players.
The Kentucky product’s competition to start is Marcus Morris, who arrived on a one-year, $15 million contract and has deep playoff experience. This is a veteran option to solidify the lineup and offer the New York Knicks capable offense and defense.
Even for a stretch four role, Julius Randle and Bobby Portis are in place. Taj Gibson is a quality backup to them. It is a crowded group, with players who all deserve minutes. Knox is one of them, but he may just take a piece of the pie. If he wants to keep that starting role from last season, it will take standing above a player like Morris and anyone who poses a threat.
Fizdale might take the lineup in another direction and hurt Knox’s chances at a top role. This is a roster of depth and options, leaving the frontcourt as one big question.
