Follow along with Daily Knicks’ free agent roundup for the New York Knicks when Sunday night, June 30 arrives.
2019 NBA Free Agency is almost here, finally ending the speculation that began during the 2018-19 season, including the New York Knicks’ connection to this group’s top players. It has game-changing potential for this franchise, but also, the chance to fail.
Since November 2018, the connection between New York and Kevin Durant built. The same for Kyrie Irving. Both were already in playoff or championship situations, but they seemed inevitable to head to Manhattan.
However, ties to the Brooklyn Nets could impact this. Los Angeles teams are also in play. Golden State may even re-sign Durant.
The Knicks will sign players, either way, with $70 million in cap space. They have roster spaces to fill, and nearly half the NBA will hit free agency. Options are prevalent for them across the board, whether on multi-year or short-term contracts.
Along with Irving and Durant, the Knicks have been linked to other players among multiple reports. It leaves their targets list including Kawhi Leonard, DeMarcus Cousins, Bobby Portis, Julius Randle and Terry Rozier. Each of them won’t cost the maximum salary, but they may consume a significant chunk of cap space if the Knicks sign any of them.
Aside from the potential moves, the only roster decisions made before free agency were Allonzo Trier‘s team option being exercised and Luke Kornet and Emmanuel Mudiay not receiving qualifying offers to unrestricted free agents. The team still has to guarantee Damyean Dotson‘s 2019-20 salary, but for fewer than $2 million, it is an inevitable choice for the front office to make.
