The unexpected: Darius Garland

Suddenly, Darius Garland is in play for the New York Knicks. according to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony. The Commodore product missed most of his only collegiate season, but that will not stop him from being under consideration at No. 3.

Garland worked out for the Knicks early Wednesday and seemed confident in New York’s interest in him, per Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News. Other teams will chase him, so maybe this is just drumming that up, but this organization has waited until the last second to meet with their eventual draft choice before, albeit under a different regime.

Garland’s sample size is small, but he is a good athletic with outside shooting ability. How that translates statistically remains unknown, but he had 16.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game on 53.7 percent shooting and 47.8 percent on three-pointers in five collegiate appearances.

This would be the early surprise of the draft, however, with how often Barrett and the Knicks were connected; even Morant as the second option. Something from Garland’s workout obviously changes the front office’s mind in this scenario, leading to early chaos at the top of the board.

It can also happen if Barrett lands No. 2, and the Knicks prefer Garland over Morant.

This pick counts as an eye-opening start to the most hectic part of the 2019 draft. Teams like the Chicago Bulls and Phoenix Suns can also use Garland, but them and anyone else interested will have their draft boards turned upside down. The drama upside is high.
