With a second pick in the first round, the San Antonio Spurs can add to their pool of young talent with the selection acquired last summer. Via the Kawhi Leonard trade, this conveyed after the Toronto Raptors fell between picks 20-30.

Forwards to fit the middle of the lineup was necessary. They already added this in PJ Washington, but another one is worth fitting into their rotation.

Cameron Johnson is not the most tantalizing prospect available, especially after five collegiate seasons and at age 23. The Spurs have not shied from older players in recent drafts, though, including Derrick White after four years in school.

Johnson was a veteran on a talented North Carolina team that had National Championship potential, but fell to Auburn in the Sweet 16. Still, the senior forward stood out as a quality shooter, with 16.9 points and 2.7 three-pointers made per game.

There is some value as a defender here, but Johnson will be drafted for his scoring ability. If he can work off a contender’s bench, landing this late, or even in the second round, can make him a steal.
