It’s not Ja Morant. It’s certainly not Zion Williamson, who New York Knicks fans dreamed of playing at Madison Square Garden 41 times per season. That will obviously disappoint a significant part of the supporters, but they can still take one of this class’s top players.
Once upon a time, RJ Barrett was considered the top recruit for 2018. Then Williamson stepped onto the court, overshadowing his star teammate at Duke for the next six months.
Questions accompanied Barrett along the way. Maybe due to him not playing to Williamson’s level, with questionable shot selection, a high usage rate and a disparaging overall slash line, but the talent was still apparent from one of the nation’s best players.
Barrett averaged 22.6 points per game. The scoring ability exists, with dynamic ways to finish with his left hand, slashing through defenses to find his comfort zone. He tried to extend for three-pointers, but on over six attempts per game, it became too much and the Canadian-born prospect struggled to become the modern-day NBA player.
Granted, Barrett is just 19 years old and can develop this shot, but it depends on how he fits into a Knicks squad that may have Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant on opening night. Finding shots will be difficult.
Trading this pick is another option, but with New Orleans atop the draft, whether this is enough to acquire Anthony Davis remains unknown.
