The 2019 NBA Draft continues to offer the Boston Celtics draft picks from previous trades. They could use the extra youth infusion, too, with players like Kyrie Irving, Terry Rozier, Marcus Morris and Al Horford all able to hit free agency, changing the look of a team that was expected to make the NBA Finals.

Ideally, the Celtics could use point guard depth here, but picking one from the available pool is a reach. If this pick does not leave by trade, it can be used on arguably the most talented but controversial player left on the board.

Kevin Porter Jr. could land higher in the first round, but a suspension, injury woes and not starting for a disappointing USC team have him outside the lottery and into the 20s. The numbers are not special, especially 52 percent on free throws, but 47.1 percent shooting in 22.1 minutes is enough to raise an eyebrow.

Porter had five consecutive games of double-digit points to open the season. He looked like a top-10 pick. The upside is that, pending if the combine lets his stock rise, but can he overcome the issues in the draft process?

Porter is an intriguing backup to Gordon Hayward — potentially back to pre-injury play —  in Boston’s future lineups. Playing alongside Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown has upside, but the offseason could take them in different directions. Frankly, a set role is difficult to pinpoint, given the year-by-year direction Celtics executive, Danny Ainge takes this franchise.

Once upon a time, Porter could have been a fit for the New York Knicks in the top 10. Circumstances, of course, changed that, but this is a talented player if he stays the course.
