1. Los Angeles Clippers ($59.66 million)

The Los Angeles Clippers easily pose the biggest threat to the New York Knicks. Not only do they have the location, but a proven head coach in Doc Rivers, a young roster that just took the Golden State Warriors to six games and nearly $60 million in cap space to add to it all.

Why wouldn’t this appeal to top free agents?

Los Angeles is just down the state from the Warriors for Kevin Durant. The same for Klay Thompson, whose father, Michael, played in the city from 1986-91 for the Lakers. It is also Kawhi Leonard‘s hometown.

Add the aforementioned reasons for players to join them, and it’s arguably the most appealing destination.

The Clippers, with this arsenal, walking out of free agency with no one would surprise. They have the room to make something happen, whether it’s Durant, Leonard or someone else. Heck, it sits better than the team they share the Staples Center with that has LeBron James. Who would have thought that 12 months ago?

The Clippers should remain in the mix for similar players to the Knicks in free agency, leaving these teams neck and neck for the chaos of free agency’s opening minutes, hours and days. One might sign the player the other wants and vice verse.

The Knicks and Clippers will have the most money to spend and creates an interesting picture for the open market. Other teams with ample cap space could shake up the picture, as well, beyond those already mentioned. Who will win the offseason with their money?
