David Griffin now runs the New Orleans Pelicans front office. He brings a championship pedigree from Cleveland to the Bayou and will look to reshape a franchise flooded with disappointment and the Anthony Davis trade rumors.
Per The Athletic, Griffin believes Davis is open to staying in New Orleans, but wants to know if he is “all-in” or “all-out” on a future with the franchise.
With everything that transpired in-season, it would be a surprise for Davis to stay. He could not join the Los Angeles Lakers after failed trade attempts between two former executives, and there is a chance to compete for a title elsewhere in 2019-20, while the Pelicans likely flounder.
So for the first part of Griffin’s rebuild, he can take the heir apparent to Davis or insurance for the future. A risky pick, it can become Bol Bol, the talented but injured center from Oregon.
Bol underwent season-ending foot surgery after just nine games. He flashed enough potential to land this high in the draft, however, and maybe closer to the top three if health prevailed.
Bol might need a full season to heal in New Orleans, but there is no rush for their return to prominence. They have a long road ahead, and this player can assume a leading role down the line.
While an intriguing prospect, the New York Knicks have Mitchell Robinson as their center of the future.
