In 2016, when the New York Knicks traded for Derrick Rose from the Chicago Bulls, the reaction was all caught on tape.

In searching for a point guard, the New York Knicks acquired Derrick Rose from the Chicago Bulls as part of a multi-player trade. This sent the former NBA MVP to a new destination after years of battling injuries, which saddled his athleticism and kept him off the court more often than on.

Rose, a Chicago native, was forced to leave the team that selected him first overall in 2008, so one could only imagine his reaction to changing addresses.

Well Stadium, who filmed a documentary based on Rose’s NBA career, actually filmed his candid thoughts on the trade to the Knicks as he received the phone call from his agent BJ Armstrong.

It started with Rose’s comments on the rumors, and continued with how he did not want to leave Chicago. That set the stage for what NBA fans have known for nearly three years (h/t Yahoo Sports):

"“You do hear about trade rumors here and there, and this last one, the Knicks one was pretty big because it caught a lot of people’s attention,” Rose said. “I’m good with being in Chicago. We’re trying to win there, get back on the right track, so that’s the only thing I can think about. Being in Chicago, but I do hear the rumors. I never really thought about packing up and leaving or demanding a trade.”"

Rose’s disbelief to the news followed:

Instant reactions to sports trades are rarely seen, as cameras never sit and wait for them to happen, so for Stadium to capture this is surreal and an inside look at the other part of the business.

Rose was not the only player involved, either. He went with Justin Holiday and a 2017 second-round pick (Damyean Dotson) for Jose Calderon, Jerian Grant and Robin Lopez. Amazingly, Dotson and Lopez are the only players who have remained with their respective teams since the trade.

The Knicks only kept Rose for the 2016-17 season, however, after a new regime took over for Phil Jackson, who acquired the oft-injured point guard in the wild west of an offseason.

Since then, Rose has bounced from the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he revived his career in 2018-19. Free agency lies ahead for the veteran guard, but he should have more time left after the events of this campaign.

Rose did not work out in New York, but the footage captured by Stadium is remarkable and a unique look at a tough situation for the Memphis product. Like other traded players, he adjusted, but it still marked a checkpoint in his career.
