The New York Knicks have fewer than 10 games left in the 2018-19 season. Where do they stand in the updated lottery odds?

Only nine games remain for the New York Knicks, which will mercifully end the 2018-19 season. Losing, injuries and surprise transactions have consumed a controversial season, as this team trends towards a franchise-record run in overall losses. They already had an organizational high 18-game losing streak.

The silver lining is the 2019 NBA Draft. The Knicks have an inside track at a top pick, given their downward spiral of a season. They just need the ping pong balls to trend their way in May, when the official draft order becomes public.

There are still NBA games to play to determine the odds, however. The Knicks don’t have full security as the worst record, either.

So, as of March 23, where do New York and the other 13 lottery teams stand in the latest odds?

  1. New York Knicks (14-59): 14 percent
  2. Phoenix Suns (17-56): 14 percent
  3. Cleveland Cavaliers (19-54): 14 percent
  4. Chicago Bulls (21-52): 12.5 percent
  5. Atlanta Hawks (25-48): 10.5 percent
  6. Dallas Mavericks (28-44): 9.0 percent
  7. Memphis Grizzlies (29-43): 7.5 percent
  8. Washington Wizards (30-43): 6.0 percent
  9. New Orleans Pelicans (31-43): 4.5 percent
  10. Los Angeles Lakers (31-41): 3.0 percent
  11. Minnesota Timberwolves (32-40): 2.0 percent
  12. Charlotte Hornets (32-39): 1.5 percent
  13. Orlando Magic (35-38): 1.0 percent
  14. Sacramento Kings (35-36): 0.5 percent

The Knicks have a three-game edge over the Phoenix Suns for the first spot. While the worst three records own the same lottery odds, only the lowest record has a guaranteed placement in the top five.

While seemingly advantageous for New York, they have a 47.6 percent chance of the fifth overall pick. That’s four spots and a mile away from the top selection, which will undoubtedly become Zion Williamson. Murray State’s Ja Morant broke into the public spotlight in the NCAA Tournament and could follow this Duke star.

If the Knicks win the lottery, envisioning Williamson in the blue and orange becomes a reality. He instantly changes the franchise, and this organization becomes a rising team in the Eastern Conference.

Again, only a 14 percent chance of this exists. The Suns and Cleveland Cavaliers have just as much of a chance at No. 1. Even teams with the fourth or fifth-best lottery odds are barely behind them to claim first overall.

Draft season is almost here, which starts the NBA offseason, even if before the NBA Finals. The New York Knicks have something to look forward to, but the odds are against them. The opportunity is there — they just need some luck on Tuesday, May 14, during the playoffs.
