One pick that might haunt the Stan Van Gundy era, the Detroit Pistons made Duke’s Luke Kennard the 12th pick of the 2017 NBA Draft. He possessed the pedigree and outside shooting to have high hopes for in the Association.
Statistically, Kennard has not disappointed — shooting a quality 44.3 percent and 40.8 percent on three-pointers through nearly two seasons. His sophomore season has even included an increase in starts and points per game.
It’s difficult to know what Kennard’s ceiling is, for now. While fine as a reserve and part-time starter who stretches the floor, is that all he is? Compared to who went 13th, that might not be good enough.
The 22 year old should stick in the NBA for years to come, either way, and at least act as a floor spacer off the bench — maybe for a playoff team down the line.
In the draft lead-up, the New York Knicks were interested in Kennard, per Chad Ford. He was a fast riser and drew the eye of multiple teams. Ntilikina went eighth, of course, and this went in Detroit’s favor. But, there’s no groundbreaking difference between these players.
