Picked 10th, Zach Collins went from Gonzaga to the Portland Trail Blazers, who traded up with the Sacramento Kings to make him their latest big man. He was not a starter in college, but pedigree as a top recruit out of high school and the athletic upside shown as a center in the post and behind the arc made this an intriguing prospect.
Collins joined a quality team in 2017, that could let him develop diligently off the bench. While that happened, the Las Vegas, NV product only shot 39.8 percent as a rookie for 4.4 points and 3.3 rebounds. Sophomore year has proved differently, with 6.5 points on 47.1 percent shooting.
It’s almost exclusively as a reserve, as Portland let him start just once. More could arrive down the line, but that will take fighting past Jusuf Nurkic, who inked a new contract in 2018.
The New York Knicks could have selected Collins, but they still had Kristaps Porzingis and Willy Hernangomez at the time. That was enough to inspire the future frontcourt.
Of course, both are not rostered as of March 6, but Mitchell Robinson is around. That’s enough to not scoff at passing on Collins.
