Perhaps the lottery’s most curious pick, the Los Angeles Clippers selected the rising Jerome Robinson from Boston College. He was listed as a mid-20s first-round selection in mock drafts, but the Jerry West-helmed front office made this player the penultimate selection of the first 14 picks.
However, Robinson’s early career has been quiet, while splitting time between the G League and the NBA.
For the Clippers’ developmental squad, the rookie guard has 20.2 points per game on 49.0 percent shooting from three-point range. That’s terrific and potentially indicative of his upside, but just 38.0 percent shooting in limited time accompanies him at the Staples Center.
Robinson may be a long-term project for the Clippers, pending they willingly wait for him to develop. Their aforementioned cap space has them involved in the NBA’s top free agents this summer, and if they want to build a team around whoever signs, the Raleigh, NC native will hypothetically become trade bait to improve the roster.
The New York Knicks, as noted, have backcourt questions for off-ball players, and Robinson could have cured part of those woes. His rookie season has left something to be desired, but limited playing time in Hollywood does not show what he can do.
