New York Knicks: NBA trade deadline winners and losers
Winner: Allonzo Trier and Damyean Dotson
The New York Knicks cleared part of their shooting guard depth, sending out Tim Hardaway Jr., who started every game he appeared in, and Courtney Lee in the Porzingis trade. Wesley Matthews was part of the return package, but his stint lasted just two games before hitting waivers.
Now, shooting guard is up for grabs, and that’s great news for two players, Allonzo Trier and Damyean Dotson for the rest of the season.
Dotson already started 12 games for the Knicks, but mostly acted as a reserve, otherwise. He’s the superior defender of the two and more consistent from the field, shooting 43.0 percent and 38.0 percent on three-pointers.
Trier possesses more upside, however. He’s broken out for five 20-point games, including one 31-point outing. Streakiness has been a problem, as the undrafted guard disappears for games at a time, and sharing the basketball became a topic, as well.
However, both players are below 25, and there’s no reason to think they can’t improve. The opportunity is there for either to start and showcase themselves as part of the Knicks’ future, and that begins with Friday’s game. Both should receive 20 to 25 minutes each through April.
The Knicks have players that walked out of the 2019 trade deadline more successful than others. Where will they stand as the season progresses?
