1. Enes Kanter
The most frequently-mentioned player in trade rumors, Enes Kanter was already linked to the Sacramento Kings and the Chicago Bulls. After public commotion over his role and a meeting with general manager Scott Perry, it brought these transaction inquiries to the forefront.
Kanter returned to the New York Knicks on an $18.6 million player option last offseason, which limited any future trade suitors ahead of the deadline, especially with the recent events. Chicago and Sacramento can send back salary that does not impact New York’s 2019-20 salary cap, making them ideal partners.
The Turkish center’s money also makes up most of the Knicks’ salary cap for free agency. Unless he takes a reduced deal, there’s little reason to think he returns.
For now, Kanter’s role is in flux. Like Burke, he opened as the starting center, but Mitchell Robinson overtook this role just five games in. It was regained, only to have Luke Kornet enter the lineup in December and frustrate the 26-year-old.
With 14.1 points and 11.0 rebounds per game, the numbers are not poor on paper, and he could work the paint for the Bulls, Kings or another team. He brings questionable defense around the rim, though.
Either way, this is the clear-cut pick to move before the February trade deadline. It’s a beneficial transaction for both sides, so let’s see what transpires with Kanter and the other potential candidates to leave.
