Knicks sign Allonzo Trier

No, not when the New York Knicks signed Allonzo Trier to a two-way contract after the 2018 NBA Draft, but the two-year deal signed in December 2018.

Trier joined the Knicks with an expected destination of the G League, as players on two-way agreements usually land. However, once training camp arrived, Fizdale had no intention of sending the Arizona product to Westchester, thanks to his “LeBron-like” blocks and scoring confidence.

The Knicks kept Trier on the NBA roster, opening a 45-day window for him to stay, before the organization had to make a decision to pay him. 11.3 points 47.0 percent shooting made the choice easy, and he received a two-year, $6.93 million deal, with 2019-20 as a team option.

It’s a home run for both sides. The player was paid and the organization found post-draft value.

The test does not end there for Trier, though, as he must play his way into the Knicks picking up his team option for 2019-20. His performance in 31 games seemingly makes this a formality, unless the front office wants to go all-in on 2019 free agency and open cap space.

If not, the 22-year-old guard should play into New York’s future beyond the end of 2018-19. Either way, this was the most stealthy move of the year.
