3. Clear up more cap space

The Knicks have not kept secret their intended pursuit of a big-name free agent in the summer of 2019. Doing so requires cap space — of which New York has plenty — but it never hurts to have more money to spend.

Probably the two most likely players to be traded are Courtney Lee and Tim Hardaway Jr.

Lee was reportedly on the trading block this past summer, seeing as how many teams could use his 3-and-D prowess at a reasonably cheap $12 million per year for the next two seasons.

Hardaway Jr. would be more difficult to deal due to the money he’s owed, but it would be a huge bonus for the Knicks to rid themselves of the roughly $53 million he’s due to collect over the next three years.

When the Knicks go to recruit one of the top free agents, don’t you think a good selling point would be the possible addition of another superstar?

Even if they come up empty, that money could still be used in a variety of ways, ranging from acquiring draft picks, shoring up deficiencies within the roster, or simply preserving it for the following summer in order to try once again.
