4. Los Angeles Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers have worked through an interesting stretch to start 2018-19. First, there was hype around LeBron James’ arrival. Then, struggles followed which ensued speculation on head coach Luke Walton‘s status.
Since the last event, the Lakers have simmered and found a winning record in the Western Conference. That’s not stable ground, however, with a loaded Western Conference.
Part of Los Angeles’ problem has been outside shooting. While not a dynamic player from behind the arc, Dotson can provide enough long-distance shots and quality defense, given his 6-foot-6 size, to cover wings.
NBA teams can’t have enough “3-and-D” players, especially in this conference. The Lakers seem like an inevitable team to make a change, too, with the pressure of James’ presence.
Dotson wouldn’t move the needle towards a championship, but he at least adds depth to the middle of the lineup, especially on a cheap contract, as the Magic Johnson-led front office potentially pursues more expensive options in 2019.
The New York Knicks can seek a future second-round pick. With Los Angeles’ desperation, maybe they receive the 2019 selection or two second-rounders.
Plus, it’s a benefit for Dotson to join a contender. After showing what he can do for a bottom-five team in the East, there’s a chance he shines with a grander spotlight.
