New York Knicks: Who stepped up in tight game against Blazers?
Emmanuel Mudiay
Stat Line: 16 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 6-for-9 shooting, 2-for-4 on three-pointers, 2-for-2 on free throws
The developing story for the New York Knicks, Emmanuel Mudiay has played like a different player on offense. Defensively, it’s a different story, but his impact as a secondary contributor has become an intriguing side story.
Before Tuesday, Mudiay shot 60 percent from the field as a starter for 12.7 points. He even had a 33.3 percent mark on three-pointers — topping his career numbers.
For the season itself, the fourth-year guard still shot 50 percent. So, it made his 6-for-9 clip boost this number and provide just another quality offensive evening.
Mudiay’s 16 points were third to Hardaway and Trey Burke, but he also added four assists, two rebounds and two three-pointers.
It’s almost normal for Mudiay to hit shots for the Knicks, which was unexpected entering 2018-19. He seemed on the outside looking in, especially after a poor preseason.
Fizdale always wanted to give Mudiay a chance, but for his passing. While that has helped the team’s pace, his offense is a bonus and refreshing for this developmental season.
If it sustains, the Knicks not only have a stable rotation player through April, but Mudiay can boost his free agent stock. That might not bring a starting job elsewhere, but at least a multi-year deal.
The New York Knicks will return to face the Celtics on Wednesday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. It’s a one-game road trip before returning home after Thanksgiving.
