Ntilikina played terrifically until Oct. 29. His defense was on point and there was some consistency behind the arc with a made three-pointer in seven consecutive games, hitting over 40 percent of them to defy the 2017-18 average.
A four-game slide followed for Ntilikina, who averaged just 4.3 points, 24.1 percent shooting and missed 13 consecutive three-pointers.
For someone who seemingly made strides with his jumpshot, it was a drastic turn of events. There were questions if his confidence was gone, too, especially after a 0-for-6 game against the Chicago Bulls.
Doubts were cast aside quickly, however, after a return to form in Atlanta.
In 22 minutes, Ntilikina went 5-for-10 from the field for 14 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 2 three-pointers. He fouled out in the fourth quarter, but left on a high note in one of his most efficient games of the season.
As long as this remains consistent, and in this development season, the point guard job is Ntilikina’s to lose. He brings a defensive ability to the floor that no one else on the New York Knicks can match, and each offensive gain pushes him in the right direction to become a multi-faceted contributor.
With that, there’s little doubt Ntilikina will ever relinquish the top spot in the point guard power rankings.
