With each game, Damyean Dotson makes his limited playing time in 2017-18 even more questionable. It carried into the first two games of 2018-19, but the Houston product has done nothing to relinquish his consistent appearances.
Dotson took over Kevin Knox‘s role in the rotation upon injury, which worked into a spot in the starting lineup. With Knox’s return against the Chicago Bulls, it could limit the minutes for the second-year man, taking effect within the next week.
Through 35.1 minutes in Week 3, however, Dotson continued his streak of double-digit point games with 13, 11, 11 and 18 to average 13.3. 5.5 rebounds gave him value outside of this.
The standout game was the 18-point effort in the double-overtime loss to Chicago. One of the few to shoot over 45 percent, he went 7-for-14 and hit 2 three-pointers.
There’s little reason for Dotson to lose his starting spot. His two-way play provides something extra on defense over the player he replaced, Trey Burke, who’s sliding on the bench.
Knox may at least cut into the 31.8 minutes per game, but as long as Dotson remains a starter, he’s in good position with the New York Knicks in 2018-19.
