3. Frank Ntilikina

David Fizdale was intrigued with Frank Ntilikina in the preseason and wanted to experiment with his spot in the starting lineup. At first, it came in a defensive role at small forward for five games and followed with a move to the starting lineup with Friday’s matchup versus the Golden State Warriors.

In his second run as the primary ball handler, the Frenchman posted 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in 32 minutes, which continued his lengthy stays on the court. Off the stat sheet was his defense, something that consistently stands out, and he entered the night with a 104.5 Defensive Rating, as noted by Tommy Beer of Forbes.

Penetration to the paint also allowed Ntilikina to dish to the big men inside, expanding his distribution repertoire.

Ntilikina started the game red-hot from behind the arc, hitting two of his three outside shots for the evening. It was more than his two-point field goals, as well, making this a somewhat unusual line for the second-year guard.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the night, the 20-year-old took 13 shots, an early season-high after his previous top mark of 11 against Golden State. He may have the green light to shoot, and for offensive development, it helps his confidence.

There’s still plenty of time to assess Ntilikina’s offensive game as it’s a work in progress. Can he make it three consecutive double-digit point outings?
