From the end of the bench, Damyean Dotson joined the rotation in the last two games of Week 1 and claimed over 30 minutes to start Week 2. Then came the rotation changes, which pushed him into the starting lineup against the Warriors and Nets.

The Miami game put Dotson over the top, with his first double-double of the season at 20 points and 10 rebounds on 8-for-14 shooting. It followed up his double-digit point efforts in the previous games and secured a rotation spot, earning Fizdale’s trust, according to Marc Berman of The New York Post:

"“Obviously, with [Knox’s] injury it opened up a slot and opportunity where I said, here’s a window I can reward this kid for what he’s been doing,” Fizdale said. “It was hard not to play him right away, because we have a lot of young guys I’ve got to look at. But e’s really earned his way, and he’s got my trust, for sure,” Fizdale said."

It was indeed an opportunity that arose when Kevin Knox injured his left ankle. Dotson assumed the open sixth-man role at first, which was the rookie forward’s, until he jumped into the starting lineup shortly after.

Knox may return as soon as Friday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks, however. What that does to Dotson’s time will make for an interesting storyline or if it impacts another player’s role, potentially Mario Hezonja or Allonzo Trier.

For now, the starting three spot belongs to the second-year man from Houston. As long as he produces quality numbers from the field, he’ll remain a supplementary part of New York Knicks offense.
