Tim Hardaway Jr.’s rise was necessary for the New York Knicks to move forward in their continued run without Kristaps Porzingis. So, for him to take the No. 1 spot in the inaugural 2018-19 player rankings arrives with no surprise.

The slash line won’t paint Hardaway as New York’s most efficient player at 41.8 percent shooting. He took at least 21 shots in each game and made no more than 10 of them, so it never led to a 50 percent mark from the field. However, given what this team needs from him as their top scorer from beyond the paint, a high volume is necessary.

So far, the Michigan product has 27.0 points on 3.5 made three-pointers per game, both of which place him in the top 15 in the NBA. A sustained mark above 25 points might not last, but the successful perimeter shots could, especially in the modern-day game where everyone looks for their long-range game.

Hardaway has interesting matchups ahead versus the Heat and Warriors, however, that will test how much he can do against intriguing defensive units. The Celtics limited him to just 38.1 percent shooting, so will something similar be in store in the second week?

With Kanter’s play to open the season, Hardaway needs another standout week to remain in the top spot. Where will he play on Tuesday, Oct. 30, along with the other Knicks in the power rankings?
