It was a sloppy start for Trey Burke in the preseason, with shooting averages below 40 percent, and Frank Ntilikina’s five-game run topped it. Despite that, head coach David Fizdale named the former the starter at point guard, which he earned with regular season play.
Burke struggled against the Nets in the second game, shooting 27.3 percent for eight points. Otherwise, he averaged 15.0 points and 5.6 assists on a 48.7 mark from the field in the other three games.
It’s steady numbers that resemble his play from 2017-18, off the G League run with the Westchester Knicks. The New York Knicks called him up and allowed a 36-game run to close the season, which led to the return on a partially guaranteed deal.
Now, with this early play, and due to Frank Ntilikina’s placement in the starting lineup, point guard belongs to Burke. That’s even when Emmanuel Mudiay, who’s out with an ankle injury, returns; he has yet to play, but preseason issues and a lack of playing time might make this stick.
Burke will try to follow up on his strong first week with the Miami game and onward. Can he continue to provide secondary scoring for the Knicks?
