Points per game the leading scorer averages without Porzingis: 16.5

Porzingis’ absence placed Tim Hardaway Jr. and Enes Kanter as the New York Knicks’ leading scorers, and they finished with 17.5 points and 14.1 points per game, respectively. With more of the same to start 2018-19, someone must emerge as the main point man.

Whether it’s Hardaway Jr., Kanter or someone else, expect something in the ballpark of the 17.5 and 14.1 points per game marks. There’s no elite scorer on the roster outside of Porzingis, unless one player’s production takes off.

Will Hardaway Jr. or Kanter lead the Knicks in scoring? Probably. Kevin Knox, pending improvement from the preseason, may work his way into the mix some nights. Allonzo Trier showcased intriguing potential, too.

However, it’s the veterans that likely lead the way. Not anything otherworldly, but somewhere between those two numbers, like an over/under of 16.5 points.

Hardaway’s career-high was the 17.5 points in 2017-18. Kanter’s 14.1 was not, but he once averaged 15.5 with the Utah Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder.

It’s possible Hardaway’s numbers fall and Kanter’s rise and vice verse. Neither may cross 20 points, but if one of them lands within the 16.5 range, would it be a surprise?
