New York Knicks: Who impressed in the fourth preseason game?
1. Allonzo Trier
Allonzo Trier stayed quiet for most of the game, but an outburst in the latter part of the second half provided the undrafted rookie with yet another interesting night.
With 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting, Trier delivered an impressive night to showcase for a spot on the New York Knicks’ roster on opening night. That’s after the organization gave him a two-way contract in free agency, which he has outplayed so far in October.
It’s difficult to imagine a trip to the G League for Trier to open the season, especially after another productive night at the top of New York’s stat sheet. That’s while other expected contributors have struggled so far, including Kevin Knox and Mario Hezonja.
Point guard has provided no answers for the Knicks, either, and while considered a two-guard, he still found four assists against the Wizards. It tied Emmanuel Mudiay, who did not appear until the fourth quarter and failed to score.
Ntilikina and Trey Burke had fine nights, but neither has run away with the job. So would Fizdale consider a ball-dominant guard to handle the distributor role?
In whatever role Trier receives, it should happen with the main roster. If not, it would be an upset to see the Knicks send him to Westchester. They can keep him on the two-way contract and avoid making a decision until the allotted 45 days expire.
The decision will arrive soon on Trier’s fate. Will the Knicks move in the direction no one guessed before the preseason started?
