Knicks acquire: Andrea Bargnani
Raptors acquire: Marcus Camby, Steve Novak, Quentin Richardson, a 2014 second round pick, a 2016 first round pick and a 2017 second round pick
Andrea Bargnani carried over international hype as the No. 1 overall pick of the 2006 NBA Draft. A seven-footer with an NBA body, athleticism and ability to score from all over the court provided intrigue, and the Toronto Raptors took the gamble.
Bargnani came into his own from 2008-11, with 17.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 45.8 percent shooting and 37.8 percent from behind the arc. Not numbers of an All-Star top pick, but not a bust, either.
Then came the injuries. He missed 35 of 66 games in the strike-shortened 2011-12 season. An elbow problem also derailed Bargnani’s 2012-13 campaign to just 35 games, a sub-40 percent shooting mark and just 30.9 percent from three-point range.
Despite this, in the 2014 offseason, the New York Knicks sent a package of players to Toronto to match Bargnani’s salary, as well as the 2016 first round pick from the Denver Nuggets.
Bargnani’s two-year run at Madison Square Garden proved unremarkable. He averaged 1.2 blocks per game and had 13.3 points in season one, but failed to cross 30 percent from three-point range and tore a ligament in his below, prematurely costing him the rest of the season.
Season two actually brought decent percentages to the table, but in just 29 games, due to multiple leg injuries, including a season-long calf ailment.
The Knicks took on all of this in two non-playoff seasons and lost a top 10 pick in the process, which became Jakob Poeltl. The book is not fully out on him, but it still cost New York the chance to choose from a sizeable group of prospects.
