Ron Baker

Ron “Burgundy” Baker, as Carmelo Anthony used to call him, failed to show significant signs of improvement after his first year in the NBA. What started as a disappointing season only got worse when he was sidelined with a broken left orbital bone after getting dunked on by Anthony Davis.

Baker then required right shoulder surgery, which sidelined him for the remainder of the 2017-18 season—a truth that could influence his future.

Although Baker didn’t see much success in year two, he’s still an asset to the team with the size and hustle that he brings every night. While fans have not been the most supportive of him, especially after signing a two-year, $8.9 million deal, he has the support of his teammates for his strong work ethic, potential leadership qualities, and also serving as a solid distributor.

These all seem like traits that head coach David Fizdale would like to work with.

With one year remaining on his contract, Baker could still be waived, but it seems unlikely. The Knicks have reported that they would like to stick to one-year deals in order to make an impact during the 2019 period of free agency.

Hopefully the injury hasn’t deterred Baker’s progress as he looks to secure a consistent role in year three.

Verdict: Ron Baker will be given a chance to show improvement as he remains on the team for the 2018-19 season. Unless he makes a statement, he likely won’t be re-signed next summer.
