Kyrie Irving is reportedly interested in joining the New York Knicks during his upcoming free agency. Why would he leaved the loaded C’s for the Knicks?

Speculation over Kyrie Irving‘s upcoming free agency has led to rumors of the star point guard having interest in joining the New York Knicks. Leaving a loaded contender with young talent seems illogical for the five-time All-Star.

Why would Irving leave Boston for a Knicks franchise that has fallen short of postseason play during the previous five seasons?

It may feel like an eternity ago, but there was a day in NBA history when Irving was the man. On a team led by the greatest player of his generation, it’s admittedly difficult to gain attention as the second fiddle.

But that night in Oakland, when Irving drained a contested three to put the Cavaliers in control of a decisive Game 7, he was the hero.

The story of Kyrie Irving is relatable to every man, as the wish for appreciation is capable of winning over us all. While Boston provides a roster capable of contending for an NBA title, Irving may leave the team for exactly that reason: His team is too talented.

With the Celtics’ frontcourt duo of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum showing All-Star promise, as well as the league realization of the value of bigger, more athletic defensive threats, Irving may not have the opportunity to be the hero in Boston.

Irving is not a man who has made a living being content. While every player dreams of hitting the game-winning shot, most come to the realization that just making it to the NBA is a miracle on its own. Yet, for Irving, just making it to the league would never be enough.

Irving’s personal lack of satisfaction stems from a journey with no end. Irving wants to win, but not as a sidekick. He wants to be the face of a franchise, yet he is not a generational talent, and his physical limitations will ensure he never will be.

Irving’s abrupt departure from Cleveland was an opportunity for him to finally escape the King’s shadow, and be his own man. While his postseason absence didn’t reveal who the next face of the Boston Celtics will be, it may have proven not to be Irving.

So why would Kyrie Irving join the New York Knicks?

When following the mindset of Kyrie Irving, one could assume a list of requirements for the teams he would consider in free agency. While the Knicks may not seem like an enticing destination to many, they provide much of what Irving has wished for throughout his career.

Irving could become the man in New York. The team has enough talent on the current roster that they could make the playoffs with Irving’s arrival, and the New York media would be so consumed in his individual achievements that he could find contentment in his ability.

Many with the courage to see what they are capable of on their own failures, and Irving’s isolation basketball and lack of defense, could make him a liability on a team less skilled than the Celtics.

But to understand Irving, one must remember oneself. We have all aspired to be the face plastered across our city, to grace the billboards of the highest buildings, and to be able to turn any public outing into a meet and greet.

The desire of Irving is to absorb all his talent is worth, and there is no better place to exchange talent for all the world has to offer outside of basketball than the mecca.
