Con: Inexperience

Jerry Stackhouse is a former NBA player and a current head coach in the G League. He played 18 seasons in the Association, making two All-Star Game appearances, and led Raptors 905 to a championship in 2017 and a trip to the Finals in 2018.

In saying that, Stackhouse is an inexperienced NBA coach in the sense that he only has one season during which he’s gone through an 82-game schedule in an assistant role.

One would think that the natural transition would be from G League head coach to NBA assistant coach. They’d certainly be high up the pecking order, even holding an associate head coach position as an understudy to the leader on the sidelines.

Stackhouse is preparing to make a massive leap from G League head coach to NBA head coach, however, and that will inevitably present new challenges.

Stackhouse has proven that he’s willing and able to work through the issues he’ll inevitably encounter. The issue at hand, however, is that he’ll be asked to lead a historically impatient Knicks team that hasn’t made the playoffs since 2012-13.

The one saving grace for Stackhouse’s inexperience: Due to the uncertainty surrounding Kristaps Porzingis’ return from injury, he could have a full season to adjust.
