Knicks Rumors: Five coaches who have been scheduled for interviews
Mike Woodson
Mike Woodson is a coach whom most would agree got the short end of the stick with the New York Knicks. Despite leading the team to resounding success during his first two seasons at the helm, an underwhelming 2013-14 campaign and a change in the front office cost him his job.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski and Ian Begley of ESPN New York, the Knicks have received permission from the Clippers to speak with Woodson about a return to New York.
"New York also has received permission to talk to former head coach Mike Woodson, who’s now serving as an assistant for the LA Clippers, league sources told ESPN."
Per Wojnarowski, the Knicks may be meeting with Woodson this week.
Woodson is one of the most successful coaches in franchise history, which makes this a more compelling report than some are giving it credit for.
Woodson was promoted to interim head coach when Mike D’Antoni resigned after 42 games in 2011-12. Woodson executed an immediate turnaround, helping the 18-24 Knicks finish the lockout-shortened season at 36-30 by going 18-6 in his 24 games at the helm.
In 2012-13, Woodson led the Knicks to their most wins since 1996-97, their first division title since 1993-94, and their first postseason series victory since 1999-2000.
Prior to his tenure with the Knicks, Woodson led the Atlanta Hawks to 47 wins in in 2008-09 and 53 wins in 2009-10. For his career, he has two 50-win seasons and three postseason series victories on his resume.
Bringing a former coach back would be a polarizing decision, but Woodson experienced compelling success during his time with the team.
