Knicks Rumors: Five coaches who have been scheduled for interviews
Jerry Stackhouse
A dark-horse candidate amongst fans, Jerry Stackhouse is one of the most promising young stars in the coaching community. Stackhouse is a former player who has experienced immediate success as a head coach in the NBA G League.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the New York Knicks are finalizing plans to meet with Stackhouse during the upcoming week.
There are other options that will be considered, but Stackhouse ranks amongst the most compelling candidates available.
As a player, Stackhouse was a two-time All-Star and an automatic scorer who could terrorize opponents before injuries caught up to him. His success as a head coach is beginning to trump his time as a player, however, which is the true foundation for his appeal.
In two seasons with the Toronto Raptors’ G League affiliate, Raptors 905, Stackhouse led his team to the 2017 championship and the 2018 G League Finals.
Raptors 905 ranked No. 1 in the G League in defensive rating during both of Stackhouse’s seasons at the helm. That’s an appealing truth for a Knicks franchise that hasn’t ranked in the top 10 in defensive rating since 2011-12.
Throw in Stackhouse’s ability to connect with modern players, and the 43-year-old becomes an incredibly ideal fit for the orange and blue.
