Knicks Rumors: Five coaches who have been scheduled for interviews
David Fizdale
The New York Knicks are in the market for a coach who can help establish a new identity. That identity would ideally consist of the abilities to defend at a high level, move the ball offensively, and appeal to high-profile free agents during the offseason.
According to Stefan Bondy of The New York Daily News, players’ coach David Fizdale revealed to reporters that he will interview for the opportunity to establish that new identity.
"David Fizdale, considered by some as a leading candidate for the Knicks, is scheduled to interview next week for their vacant coaching position. The 43-year-old revealed that news to reporters in Oakland on Friday while visiting a buddy, Steve Kerr, at a Warriors practice."
Only time will tell if Fizdale is hired, but there’s a growing belief that he’s a preferred option.
Fizdale began his NBA coaching career in 2003, which gives him the type of experience that the Knicks are looking for. His tenures as an assistant tasked him with coaching the likes of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Joe Johnson, Al Horford, and Jason Richardson.
Having proven that he can manage egos and develop healthy relationships with stars, Fizdale has become a target of a Knicks team that’s hoping to make a splash in free agency.
As a head coach, Fizdale led the Memphis Grizzlies to the playoffs during the 2016-17 season. He was unceremoniously fired after just 19 games in 2017-18, but players and coaches from around the Association quickly jumped to his defense.
It’s only a matter of time before Fizdale is a head coach again. New York is hopeful that he’ll prioritize The Mecca.
