Jerry Stackhouse

One of the most compelling stories of the past three seasons has been the emergence of Jerry Stackhouse as a head coach. A two-time All-Star as a player, Stackhouse has become an essential member of the Toronto Raptors’ brilliantly run organization.

Tasked with developing many of the players who have given Toronto the best second unit in the NBA, Stackhouse is now surfacing on NBA radars.

For those unfamiliar, Stackhouse was an assistant coach for the Raptors in 2015-16. He’s since taken over as head coach of Raptors 905, Toronto’s G League affiliate, where he’s experienced resounding success.

According to Frank Isola of The New York Daily News, Stackhouse will be one of the dark horse candidates for the New York Knicks job if Jeff Hornacek is relieved of his duties.

"The longshot candidate is Stackhouse, LeBron’s former teammate in Miami, who is making a name for himself coaching Toronto’s G-League affiliate. Stackhouse is ready to be an NBA head coach and there is talk of him potentially landing in Orlando. Tough, confident and demanding, Stackhouse and Scott Perry go back nearly 20 years with the Detroit Pistons."

Stackhouse may not be directly in the public eye amongst those who aren’t basketball diehards, but he’s certainly earned consideration.

Stackhouse led Raptors 905 to the 2017 G League championship and was honored as the 2017 G League Coach of the Year. Despite losing what was essentially his entire roster, Stackhouse has Raptors 905 back in the title hunt with a record of 30-19 in 2017-18.

The primary reason for Raptors 905’s success: A No. 1 ranking in the G League in points allowed per game. Defense over everything is certainly an appealing mentality.

Based on his ties to Scott Perry, this could be a realistic option.

The question is: Will the New York Knicks actually move on from Jeff Hornacek? Or will he receiver one more season to right the ship?
