If Caleb Martin is the sharpshooting scorer, then Cody Martin is the playmaker who can help facilitate an offense. Standing at 6’7″ with a sturdy frame, Martin has the physical tools and skill level to be a high-quality contributor on both ends of the floor.
Three-point shooting is a weakness that will limit Martin’s appeal in 2018 NBA Draft circles, but he could fill a significant void at small forward.
Martin’s primary offensive appeal is his unique combination of court vision and passing ability. He’s a legitimate point forward who can push the pace and set his teammates up in transition, or operate in the half court to help create an efficient flow.
Martin is also an excellent finisher at the rim and a high-quality athlete who can get into the paint and finish with both power and finesse in traffic.
While the offensive skill set is appealing, the true reason to be intrigued by Martin is his defensive versatility. He’s an excellent rebounder for a wing, as well as a playmaker who can create turnovers. He’s also a capable help-side rim protector and a positionally flexible on-ball defender.
The New York Knicks desperately need size, length, and defensive prowess along the wings. Martin could provide it if selected in the second round of the 2018 NBA Draft.
