New York Knicks: Five reasons signing Troy Williams was the right move

Troy Williams has made the most of his opportunities during his two 10-day contracts. The New York Knicks rightfully rewarded him with a multi-year deal.

When it was first reported that the New York Knicks signed Troy Williams to a 10-day contract on Monday, Feb. 19, few knew what to expect. Williams was a virtual unknown amongst casual fans, as well as an enigma amongst diehards and college-level enthusiasts.

As he nears the end of his second 10-day contract, however, Williams has made it abundantly clear that he should be signed to a multi-year deal.

To be clear, a multi-year contract wouldn’t necessarily require New York to sign Williams for the next four years. It could be as simple as inking him through the remainder of the 2017-18 season and including a non-guaranteed salary for the 2018-19 campaign.

That’s exactly what New York did with point guard Trey Burke, who’s playing his way into head coach Jeff Hornacek‘s long-term rotation.

Regardless of how it’s structured, Williams has shown enough to receive an opportunity that ranges beyond this season. He has long-term value that simply won’t be completely understood over the course of the next month, which is why the Knicks should give him at least one additional year.

The question is: What exactly has Troy Williams done to earn a multi-year deal and what type of value might the New York Knicks be getting from this endeavor?
