Most have been quick to point out that the New York Knicks would have close to zero chance of drafting Deandre Ayton at No. 9. Ayton is a virtual lock to come off the board in the top five, as well as a prime candidate to go No. 1 overall.

The lottery exists for a reason, however, and evaluating Ayton should remain a top priority for Scott Perry and the New York Knicks.

After Allonzo Trier led Arizona to victory in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Tournament, it was Ayton who stepped up in the semifinals. He was stellar in every phase of the game, even displaying the shot-blocking ability that many had been waiting to see.

Ayton finished the unforgettable clash with the UCLA Bruins with 32 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals in 40 minutes of unbelievable action.

Ayton shot 13-of-16 from the field, 1-of-1 from beyond the arc, and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. He recorded at least two blocks for the sixth time in seven games, and flashed his ability to score from virtually anywhere on the court.

If the Knicks have a chance to pair Ayton with Kristaps Porzingis, there shouldn’t be a moment of hesitation involved in that decision.
