Knicks Trade Rumors: Pros and cons of trading for Rondae Hollis-Jefferson
Con: Opportunity Cost
The New York Knicks having interest in Rondae Hollis-Jefferson makes sense on multiple levels. The unfortunate reality of the Knicks wanting to acquire Hollis-Jefferson, however, is that they aren’t the only franchise that covets his potential.
The Brooklyn Nets may be willing to trade Hollis-Jefferson to their cross-city rivals, but only for the steep price of a first-round draft pick.
New York may be in pursuit of an elusive postseason appearance, but it’s also in the midst of a rebuild. It may not be a Sam Hinkie, burn it to the ground and watch the draft picks flow type of rebuild, but it’s a rebuild nonetheless.
This is the first season during which the Knicks are playing through 22-year-old franchise player Kristaps Porzingis, which means every move must fit his timeline.
Knowing that to be true, one can’t help but value a first-round draft pick that could get a young and promising player on a cost-controlled contract. That would not only facilitate the long-term vision, but give New York cap flexibility as they attempt to add other players through free agency.
Hollis-Jefferson may prove to be worth the cost of doing business, but it’s a price that the Knicks must thoroughly consider before committing to.
